Now that I’ve left Indonesia (we’re currently in transit in Kuala Lumpur, if you were wondering), I can finally publish my complete guide of Indo-bus-knowledge, two months and many hours of discomfort in the making.

a) local buses will wait until (very) full- the longest we waited was 5 hours before giving up.

b) the journey may take several hours longer than expected, rarely due to traffic. See “Drivers”.

c) you might depart 2 hours later than planned because the driver of the bus you originally booked will decide to pick you up from a hotel other than the one you are staying in, and will thus depart without either you or a second thought.

Atmosphere on board
a) stiflingly hot, bordering on suffocating. See “your fellow passengers”.

b) AC seems to stand for “air complimentary”, i.e. you might be allowed to open the windows at no extra charge…
